School-aged children are among those in America most severely affected by hunger. According to recent Feeding America research, 20 percent of children face hunger each and every day. In northwest Pennsylvania, that number is considerably higher, as children comprise 29 percent of the individuals the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania serves.
Second Harvest operates several programs to alleviate childhood hunger.
The BackPack program provides children with nutritious, child-friendly food on Fridays and helps provide the proper nutrition necessary for weekends when other food resources are not available.
The Kids Café Program provides free after-school programs that offer homework assistance, nutrition education and recreational activities along with a meal.
