On September 28, 2017, the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania marked 35 years of service to the community. With the help of our Platinum Sponsor HERO Bx, Second Harvest observed this milestone by presenting About Hunger & Resilience, a nationally-touring multimedia photography and audio exhibition created by Michael Nye. The exhibition features documentary photographs and accompanying audio stories from America’s hungry. Whether the subjects are chronically, occasionally, or at one time homeless, Nye’s penetrating portraits allow viewers an intimate experience with each individual’s accompanying audio story.
Artist Statement from Photographer Michael Nye:
Hunger is as old as history and is wrapped into our genes as the great impulse to survive. Everyone knows the boundary between hunger and satisfaction. However, for many of us in this country of abundance, it is difficult to imagine someone so hungry and weak they would cry or lose the desire to live.
This exhibition is about the experience of hunger. The stories are not intended to summarize or explain anyone’s life. There are too many ways a voice can turn. Many of the people I have met have struggled to find the right words to describe the weight of responsibility, loss, kindness, and dignity.
Following the opening event on September 28th, Second Harvest will continue to host the art exhibition from September 29th until October 18th. Local organizations, businesses, schools and the general public are invited to view About Hunger & Resilience. In addition to viewing the exhibition, visitors also have the opportunity to tour Second Harvest and work in the newly renovated volunteer area, depending on the scheduled field trip day.
We are grateful for those partners that are assisting us to bring this very unique presentation to northwest Pennsylvania.
