Portrait of Smiling Girl FacesThe BackPack Program

Children comprise 30 percent of the individuals Second Harvest of Northwest Pennsylvania serves. To alleviate childhood hunger, Second Harvest operates the BackPack Program at 31 sites within northwest Pennsylvania. This program provides children with nutritious, child-friendly food when other resources, such as school lunches and after-school meals or snacks, are not available. Backpacks are discreetly distributed to participating children at schools on Fridays and helps provide the proper nutrition necessary for overall growth, physical and cognitive development and satisfactory performance in school.

Second Harvest selects and obtains the food for our sites and volunteers assemble individual bags for distribution. Each backpack contains 2 breakfast items, 2 lunch items, 2 dinner items and two snacks.

If you have questions about the program, please call Cindy Plymyer at 814-459-3663 x 103 or cplymyer@nwpafoodbank.org.
