Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania commemorates its 35th year of feeding the hungry with a special event sponsored by HERO BX on Thursday, September 28th from 5-8 p.m. The event will feature Michael Nye’s traveling, multimedia art exhibition, About Hunger and Resilience.

This exhibition features documentary photographs and accompanying audio stories from America’s hungry. Whether the subjects are chronically, occasionally, or at one time homeless, Nye’s penetrating portraits allow viewers an intimate experience with each individual’s accompanying audio story.

In a statement about the exhibit, photographer Michael Nye says, “this exhibition is about the experience of hunger. The stories are not intended to summarize or explain anyone’s life. There are too many ways a voice can turn. Many of the people I have met have struggled to find the right words to describe the weight of responsibility, loss, kindness, and dignity.”

Following the event, About Hunger and Resilience will be at Second Harvest Food Bank until October 19th and is scheduled to be open to the public during the following hours:

  • Monday, October 2nd, 9:30 am to 11:30 am
  • Wednesday, October 4th, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
  • Thursday, October 5th, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Monday, October 9th, 9:30 am to 11:30 am
  • Wednesday, October 11th, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
  • Monday, October 16th, 9:30 am to 11:30 am
  • Thursday, October 19th, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

“Our mission is two-fold,” says Karen Seggi, executive director.  “Second Harvest exists to provide food to those in need. But this exhibition provides us the opportunity to meet the latter part of our mission – to create awareness and educate the community on the realities of hunger.”
